Kamehameha Hwy around Waimea Bay will reopen as one lane at 2 p.m. on April 11.

As the Prometheus crew loosened debris from above overnight, about 15-16 additional boulders came down that were about five to six feet in diameter.

There are still large boulders above that has DOT extremely concerned over the long-term.

They have wanted to net the area for over a decade but due to the sacredness of Waimea and this side particularly, there was push back.

After a landslide on March 15, a rock fall on March 25, and this rock fall on April 10, and of course the big rockfall in 2006, DOT Director Ed Sniffen said, “Every time it’s happened, we’ve been really lucky because these boulders, if they hit a car, could kill someone instantly, and we’ve been really lucky and I don’t want to be lucky anymore, we need to address this safety issue immediately.”

“To keep everyone safe, we’ll have concrete barriers on the inside lane with a 10-foot netting on top of it so if smaller material comes down we can protect the public from it, the longer term plan is to drape the mountain to ensure if anything falls in the future, it will be contained behind it,” he added.

He says draping that side of the mountain will take about three to four months and will require one lane to be closed during the work.

Also, had Prometheus not stabilized the slope so quickly from the landslide on March 15, Sniffen says the entire road would have collapsed yesterday due to the water line bursting and blowing out the makai lane.

EXPECT MAJOR DELAYS IN THIS AREA THROUGH THE BUSY SUMMER MONTHS.

MAHALO PROMETHEUS FOR YOUR HARD AND FAST WORK AND MAHALO ED FOR ADDRESSING SO MANY STORM-RELATED ISSUES EVERY DAY AND BEING ON NORTH SHORE EVERY SINGLE DAY SINCE MARCH 20.

A cultural blessing of the pohaku was arranged prior to removal from the road and will rest close to home at Waimea Valley.

A Flood Watch has been issued for the Hawaiian Islands and will be in effect from Wednesday (4/8) morning through Friday (4/10) afternoon. Expect potential impacts from heavy rain and gusty winds.

From the National Weather Service: “Significant flooding may occur due to excessive rainfall and overflow of streams and drainages. Roads in several areas may be closed, along with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.”

City officials are closely monitoring weather conditions and water levels around the island. Follow HNL Alert and official social media channels for updates. Visit hnlalert.gov to sign up to get weather updates sent to you directly.
